Primer Project - Translation: JOHN HEJDUK’S MASQUE
Autumn 2021, 3 weeks
*Developed in collaboration with Royal Academy of Arts
*Currently exhibiting in Royal Academy of Arts as a part of the exhibition 'John Hejduk: London Mask' (22 Mar — 21 May 2023)
John Hejduk was an architect who believed that ideas were as important as buildings and that architecture had the power to evoke alternative worlds. This project was to translate his sketches & texts with my own personal interpretations and narratives.
VET-GEAR is a performance architecture, which is initiated by human power that feeds, plays with, and serves the animals. In a machine composed of gear (to walk) and steel mesh (to dispense) parts, the action of walking generates the rotational force.
With the visual that evokes the heavy machinery encapsulating subverted subjects, this provocative architecture questions our relationship with animals and existing spatial structure.
